The Holy Bharat Kund is located in Ayodhya about 20km to the south of, on Ayodhya Sultanpur Road. It is believed to be the place where Lord Rama’s younger brother Bharata ruled the Kosala kingdom while Rama was in exile for fourteen years. According to tradition, Bharat Ji performed penance here upon Lord Rama’s return from exile, hence it is named Nandigram (Bharat Kund). Ancestral offerings (Pindadan) are highly significant at this place. People come here to perform the rite of shraddh (prayers for departed ones) and also take a holy dip in the Kund (pond). Spiritually where Lord Ram conducted the Shraddh ceremony for his father, King Dasharatha.

Religious Significance Of BharatKund:

According to Ramayana, Bharat Kund is believed to be the place where Bharat, Rama’s younger brother performed extensive rites and worshipped Rama’s slippers (padukas) when he was banished from Ayodhya for fourteen years. They say that out of great love for his elder brother, Bharat carried Rama’s padukas and placed them on the throne as a sign of Rama being the rightful king. Then he settled in Nandigram, BharatKund where he governed the kingdom on behalf of Rama until his return.

The Kund itself is believed to have been created by Bharat to facilitate his ablutions and rituals. It is said he dug the Kund to provide water for his daily prayers and religious observances. In course of time this site became a place of pilgrimage and devotion for followers of Lord Rama. Bharata Kund is an important place in Hinduism that symbolizes Bharat’s faith towards his elder brother Ram. It is a nod to the upright demeanor and determination that Bharat maintained to fulfill Rama’s directives. The given kund is a well-known site for visitors, particularly those coming to Ayodhya.

Recent Developments: Development Plans for Bharat’s Meditation Site Unveiled

Ram Janmabhoomi project has been completed, and now preparations are underway for the development of Bharat’s meditation site known as BharatKund, this project will start with the beautification of Bharatkund Railway Station and extending to a meditation site as indicated by Ayodhya MP Lallu Singh. The Uttar Pradesh State Construction Corporation will responsible for this project.

A budget worth 41 crore rupees has been cleared for the development of Bharat’s meditation site. This beautification process is not limited to Bharatkund Railway Station only but also includes locations connected with Lord Ram within an 84-kilometer radius. It is expected that this artistic improvement aimed at attracting pilgrims would cost about 8,000 crore rupees. Regarding this move, Ayodhya MP Lallu Singh said that ongoing beautification works at Bharatkund Railway Station are part and parcel. He maintained that these tasks would be handled by Uttar Pradesh State Construction Corporation covering sites related to Lord Ram.

The Chaurasi Kosi Path is an 84-kilometer stretch that is home to about 150 divine and religiously significant sites including birthplaces and sacred meditation places of several Rishis, Munis etc as pointed out by Singh. An enormous project worth around INR 8000 crores is the Chaurasi Kosi Path project.
